MP Speaks at Esperanto Congress

North East Herts MP Oliver Heald was Guest of Honour at the Opening of the British Esperanto Congress at Plinston Hall, Letchworth Garden City on Saturday 5 May.

Speaking to the Congress, Oliver Heald said, “Gesinjoroj, Mi estas kontenta esti kun vi je tio Kongreso kaj Mi bonvenigas vin Letchworth ĝardenon Urbon. sole lastatempe Ke mi eltrovis ke krom li multaj aliaj interesoj kaj talentoj, Ebenezer Howard estis fervora varbanto de Esperanto. estas sekve konvena ke vi estas tie ĉi ĉi tiu semajnfino en la unua ... de la mondo ĝardeno urbo. Tiuj de vi kiuj(n) havas vizititan la urbon antaŭ havos viditajn kelkajn ŝanĝojn. Mi kredas ke Ebenezer aprobus de la laboro estanta farita reviglig la urbon kaj al emfaz lia ĝardeno urbo principoj. Mi esperas (ke) vi havas treegan ĝuan kongreson kaj mi dankas vin pro invitanta mi aliĝi vin je tio solena malfermo.”

Translated, this means, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I am pleased to be with you at this Congress and I welcome you to Letchworth Garden City. It is only recently that I discovered that in addition to his many other interests and talents, Ebenezer Howard was a keen promoter of Esperanto. It is therefore appropriate that you are here this weekend in the world’s First Garden City. Those of you who have visited the town before will have seen a number of changes. I believe that Ebenezer would approve of the work being done to revitalise the town and to underline his garden city principles. I hope you have a very enjoyable congress and thank you for inviting me to join you at this opening ceremony.”
