MP Urges Highways Authority to Reconsider Christmas Tree Decision

North East Herts MP Oliver Heald has written to Hertfordshire Highways making representations about their decision to block erection of the Christmas Tree in The Wynd in Letchworth Garden City, because of “health and safety”.

The proposal was that the Christmas Tree could only be erected if there were a two metre wide protective area around the Tree. This is of course not possible in The Wynd. There have been no incidents in previous years and the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation was disappointed at not being able to make its usual gift to the town.

Commenting, Oliver Heald said, “I have written to Hertfordshire Highways, asking them to think again about this decision. Many people in Letchworth Garden City have described this to me as “Scrooge-like behaviour” and have done impressions of Scrooge, muttering, “Bah! Humbug!”

“Whilst I appreciate the importance of “health and safety”, it seems a pity if it goes so far as to spoil Christmas.”
